One of the questions I hear most often is how to properly winterize your Apex trailer.
A major part of winterizing your Apex trailer is to protect the water system from potential damage caused by exposure to freezing temperatures.
Here are a few steps for Winterizing your Plumbing System.
Be sure to read your owner’s manuals for unit-specific winterizing guidelines. Follow the steps below that apply to your RV.
Step 1: If you have any inline water filters, remove and bypass before starting. Drain the fresh-water holding tank. Drain and flush the gray- and black-water holding tanks. If the RV doesn’t have a built-in flushing system, clean the black tank out with a wand. Drain the water heater. Open the pressure relief valve and remove the drain plug.
CAUTION: Never drain the water heater when it’s hot or under pressure.
With no water hooked up to the RV and the water pump off, open a hot-water faucet to remove any pressure on the system. Allow the tank to cool before draining.
Step 2: Open all hot and cold faucets; don’t forget the toilet valve and outside shower. Locate and open the low point water drain lines. Use the water pump to help force most of the water out of the system, but turn it off as soon as the system is drained, to prevent damaging the pump. Recap all drains and close all faucets.
Step 3: Bypass the water heater. If you do not have a bypass kit installed, the water heater will fill up with RV antifreeze before it goes through the water lines, wasting 6 or 10 gallons of antifreeze.
Step 4: Install a water pump converter kit, or disconnect the inlet side of the water pump (the line coming from the fresh-water holding tank) and connect tubing from the water pump inlet into a 1-gallon jug of RV antifreeze.
Step 5: Turn the water pump on and pressurize the system. Starting with the closest faucet to the pump, slowly open the hot and then cold valves until the red-colored RV antifreeze appears. Replace the antifreeze container as required. Repeat on all faucets from the closest to the farthest away. Don’t forget the outside shower.
Step 6: Flush the toilet until antifreeze appears. Pour a cupful of antifreeze down each drain. Pour some RV antifreeze in the toilet and flush it into the holding tank to prevent any water in the tank from freezing. If your water heater has an electric heating element, turn it off. This will protect the element if the unit is plugged in while in storage. Make sure all faucets are closed.
Step 7: Consult your owner’s manuals for winterizing ice makers and washing machines.
The Apex trailer is now winterized.
Just as side note the battery will also need removed and stored inside at room temperature and kept dry.
Thanks for the comments. Can you make a video with an Apex Travel trailer?
ReplyDeleteI have a 289tbss where is the water pump located? I assumed under the bathtub, incorrectly, it is in the undeebelly? Brand new.
ReplyDeleteWhere is the water pump on a 2018 apex 215RBK
ReplyDeleteDid you find the water pump? I have no idea where mine is and cannot find anything online.
DeleteWould love a response if you found your water pump.
I have a 2019 Apex Nano and the waterpump is under the lower bunk next to the water heater. What I am have trouble with is finding where to add the antifreeze from. One video shows a third hose near the water heater by pass that has a valve to open and stick into a gallon of antifreeze and then you turn your pump on. Another shows the city water line being used with the end of the hose dropped into a bucket of antifreeze. I dont know if the pump will draw it unless I try it.
DeleteWater pump under the kitchen seat.
Deletedo I need to put antifreeze in the fresh water tank
ReplyDelete289tbss, water pump is in the bottom of the hall closet.
ReplyDeleteFor anyone owning a 250RLS APEX The water pump is located right under the range behind a removable panel. Also if you need to get behind your water heater, it's right under the fridge, by removing the panel as well. I purchased the Camco winterization kit and installed the bypass value to pump the RV antifreeze in the water lines.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know where the water pump is on the Apex 30ft BHS?
ReplyDeletecheck under the bunk, behind the water heater
DeleteTHANK YOU !!
DeleteDoes anyone know how to winterize the 191RBS?
ReplyDeleteFollow all of the steps outlined above- EXCEPT STEP 4. Since the location of the water pump is in a difficult location (next to the toilet in the covered compartment that houses the water heater), I choose to pour 4 gallons of non-toxic antifreeze in the fresh water tank, rather than installing a bypass.
Delete1. After you've put 4 gallons of RV AntiFreeze in the fresh tank, turn on the pump.
2. Start with the kitchen sink. Turn on the hot. Wait for pink to flow, then shut off hot. Now do the cold the same way. Next is the shower, then the vanity, then the outside shower. Then flush the toilet until you see pink.
3. Now turn off the pump.
4. Be sure all faucets are closed.
5. IN THE SPRING= OPEN ALL OUTSIDE DRAINS, and all faucets.
6. Flush the fresh tank with clean water- leaving the drain open.
7. After you see no pink coming out of the fresh drain, close and add 4 gallons of fresh water.
8. Close all faucets and turn on pump.
9. Turn on faucets in the same manner as step 2, waiting for pink to go away.
10. Open all outside drains.
Now you are ready to get the system ready for camping.
Clarifying step 10, this DOES NOT include ANY BLACK OR GRAY tank valves!!
DeleteThanks RJ!!!
